PACE Program Connecting to our Jewish Soul

Monday, November 03, 2008

Kol HaTamid

Parent and Child Education Program (PACE)

This unique program allows our students in grades Aleph through Hay, and their parents, an opportunity to share valued learning experiences.

How does it work? Students come to school at 9:15 a.m. and report to their classrooms.

At 9:30 AM either the child’s parent, grandparent, or other designated family adult member goes to the child’s classroom to pick up the student and then both report to the upstairs synagogue. There the participants will be divided into smaller groups to both learn and work on activities that revolve around our first theme, entitled “Connecting to Our Jewish Soul.” We will learn about the meaning of chalah, the wearing of a tallit, the lighting of candles, and much more. The girls will actually prepare chalah and receive candlesticks; the boys will make the fringes for the tallit, and much more. All adults will actively assist their children. Dismissal will be at 11:15.

There will be regular classes for students whose families do not wish to participate.

Dr. Mel Isaacs Returns

Dr. Mel Isaccs Is New Principal at Ohav Sholom Hebrew School

By Ron Bekore

Congregation Ohav Sholom, The Merrick-Bellmore Synagogue, is pleased to welcome back Dr. Mel Isaacs, who has re-assumed the role of principal of its Hebrew School.

Dr. Isaacs led the school for over two decades. He retired in 1994 to become the principal of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County’s Plainview campus. As principal at Ohav Sholom, Dr. Isaacs introduced many creative and exciting programs that impacted on its students and the parent body. Currently we have in the school a second generation of children whose own parents were students under Dr. Isaacs.

The K-7 Hebrew school, under his tutelage, was recognized by the Board of Jewish Education of New York as an outstanding institution and as a leader in the field of supplementary school education. It was his dream to have a Community Hebrew High School for students at all four of the synagogues in Merrick and beyond. This became a reality in 1989 and the school still has a strong community following.

Dr. Isaacs is a graduate of Brooklyn College (BA, MS) and received his Ed.D in Jewish School Administration from Yeshiva University. He retired this past September 30th, 2007, as the educational leader of the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC), one of Long Island’s oldest and preeminent Jewish day schools.

His primary responsibility as the Director of Education was to oversee the entire curriculum and instructional system at all of HANC’s five campuses for both general and Judaic studies, grades pre-K through twelve. He provided leadership in development and assessment of models and pilot programs designed to increase the effectiveness of the school’s instructional program.

Dr. Isaacs has spent the last 50 years in the fields of both Jewish and secular education. He has served as a classroom teacher, instructor and co-coordinator for the Merrick school district’s gifted program; Talmud Torah principal; day school principal; adjunct professor at the Azrieli Graduate School of Yeshiva University; and Director of Education for the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County.

Additionally, Dr. Isaacs continues to serve as the Long Island Coordinator for the Spelling Bee for both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Congregation Ohav Sholom looks forward to continuously developing and strengthening its role as a place of life-long Jewish learning and living. Our school models and reinforces our rich heritage, and together with Dr. Isaacs, will serve as a vital base for community residents looking for a warm, welcoming Jewish environment.

Enrollment is currently under way for the Fall 2008 school year. Membership in the synagogue is never required for enrollment in the school, at any grade level. For more information please call the synagogue office, 378-1988, and visit our website www.ohav.org

Welcome Back Dr. Isaacs

Registration materials are now available from the office. We are looking forward to some very new and exciting changes in the upcoming year:

Dr. Mel Isaacs, former Director of Education at HANC, will re-join Ohav Sholom as our Hebrew School principal. Dr. Isaacs led our school as its principal for over two decades before becoming principal of HANC-Plainview.
Our school, under his tutelage, was recognized by the Board of Jewish Education of New York as an outstanding institution and as a leader in the field of supplementary school education. We are very excited to have him back.

For your convenience, Ohav Sholom is now accepting credit cards. Please contact Rosemary in the office: 516-378-1988.

Passover 2008

Passover workshop and charoset bowl.

Dear Parents,
Excitement is growing as we get closer to the Passover Holiday.
Last Sunday our K'ton-ton through Daled classes attended the Matzoh Factory at the Oceanside JCC. On Monday, Rabbi Wohlberg made a special Passover Presentation to the Hebrew School.
This past Sunday we had a wonderful day as our younger classes had a special hands-on Passover Workshop and our older classes enthusiastically exhibited their Passover knowledge in the Charoset Bowl, topped off by music time with our teacher Jeff Beris.
Students are still crafting lovely items to bring home for the Seder, and we are already preparing for our Model Seder this Wednesday.
Our students look forward with enthusiasm to participating in their family Seders, and have been encouraged to discuss with their parents taking naps during the day so they can stay up to learn and enjoy.
Best wishes for a Happy Kosher Passover.

Sukkah Happening 2007

This year the Sukkah Happening was filled with ruach. The teacher for the hay class, Aaron Rosenthal, brought his guitar and his friend, Nochi, who also plays guitar. The children were singing and dancing and laughing and having so much fun! Rabbi Schafler told stories, and a very funny joke. If the prayer for sitting in the sukkah is "l'shav b'sukkah" what is the prayer for sitting on bubble gum? L'shav b'zookah!

Pre-Sukkot Lulav Workshop

Ohav Sholom Hebrew School Students with their families along with all Ohav Sholom Families enjoyed a wonderful, unique opportunity to learn together about the Mitzvot of Sukkot, Lulav and Etrog.

Children learned how to use the four species and were inspired to bring home the spirit of this precious tradition. A multimedia program was followed by a hands-on workshop in which children and parents joined in to explore beautiful specimens of the "four species", etrog, lulav, hadasim, and aravot. We learned together how to braid lulav holders and bands, and practice the blessings.

Each family or individual child prepared and took home a kosher lulav/etrog set.

Mechina - Merryl Katz
Morah Katz has been working at Congregation Ohav Sholom of Merrick for the past seven years. She is currently the Mechina teacher at Ohav Sholom and enjoys it very much. Working with the younger children and teaching them all about the Jewish holidays, the Hebrew Alef Bet, and Bible stories is something that she truly loves! She is currently employed at B'above Worldwide Head Start. Helping children and families reach their highest potential is very rewarding to her. She is looking forward to meeting her new class and having a great year of fun and learning!

On the faculty of the Ohav Sholom Hebrew School since 1994, she instills a love of Israel in the students. Her favorite projects include pen pal writing between American and Israeli children and a clothing and toy drive to donate to orphan homes in Israel. She loves children and has a unique way of teaching Hebrew, with a smile and love.

Kita Bet–Abby Harris
Morah Harris is currently working as an assistant teacher at HANC for Nursery Bet children and has been employed by HANC these past six years in their Early Childhood program. In previous years she worked as a Gimmel and Daled teacher at South Baldwin Jewish Center and enjoyed her teaching experience there, too. The last day of Hebrew School is this Wednesday, May 24, 2006!

Just because this is the official last day of classes, we don’t want you to forget the Awards Ceremony and Vov graduation which will take place on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 in the main Sanctuary from 6:30-7:30pm. The awards ceremony is for all grades, including the Sunday School students! We sincerely ask and encourage you all to attend!

This is my final Newsletter for the academic year 2005-2006! I hope everyone had a very educational and enjoyable year! I would like to publicly thank the following families who contributed to the Kiddush for the Hebrew School Shabbat: Bekore, Beris, Cohn, Fessler, Gott, Siegel, Sternbach and Wilkowski. Also, special thanks to all of the families who sponsored the Kiddush for the Alef Induction!

Just a friendly reminder to those who have not yet handed in their registration forms and their deposit for next year to please get them in as soon as possible! If you know of anyone who might be interested in our Hebrew School, please have them contact Les Grusgott through the office for further information.

As you all know, Mr. Jack Rubel is retiring at the end of the year. Today was our send off party for Jack Rubel. Mr. Rubel dedicated nine years to our Hebrew School and we’d once again like to say Todah Rabah. If anyone sees Mr. Rubel, make sure to thank him for his hard work and wish him well in his future endeavors! We are also sad to say goodbye to Morah Malkah Greene. As sad as we are to say goodbye, we are thrilled for her at the same time! Morah Malkah is getting married and making Aliyah to Israel. Mazel Tov and Best Wishes to Morah Malkah! Last but certainly not least, we sadly say goodbye to Morah Tamar Levine, who will be moving to Silver Spring, Maryland. We wish her and her family lots of good luck and happiness!

For those of you who signed up for the Kibooktz, the book is:

A Call for Student Book Reviews

BabagaNewz is looking for short book reviews written by students in grades 4 through 7 describing Jewish books that the student has really enjoyed. Book reviews should be 50-75 words long and answer the following questions:

* What was the book about?
* Why did you like it?
* Why would you recommend it?

Please do not send long book reports; we do not have the space to publish lengthy reports. The book review must review a Jewish book (fiction or non-fiction). Please do not limit your submissions to Holocaust-related books. If BabagaNewz decides to publish the book review, we will obtain student and parental consent before publishing the review. If we publish a submission, your school will be identified with the review and the student will receive a gift from BabagaNewz.

Chometz Burning 2006

The search for leaven. Bedikas Chometz, occurs Tuesday, April 11, 2006 after nightfall. This is the "feather and spoon" activity that all children love!
This year, on Wednesday morning, April 12, from 7:30 AM - 8 AM, Congregation Ohav Sholom (with approval from the Merrick Fire Department) will host Biyur Chometz, the burning of the remaining leaven found during the previous night's search. Although it is early in the morning, it is a great opportunity for our children to participate.

The fire dept will be present to ensure safety and participate in our ritual. I think our children will have a great time. It is early so that we can do it before work and school.

Bring your chometz to be burned. All members of Ohav Sholom and the greater Jewish Community are welcome.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Participate in the Purim Presentation

There will be a powerpoint presentation in honor of Purim after megillah reading Monday March 13. Megilla reading is 6:45 PM and the party begins at 8:00 PM.

We are looking for suggestions for everyday "villains" to be included in this presentation. Please send suggestions. These would be pictures in jpeg format, and sounds in WMA or MP3. It's possible that to send video, not yet certain if it can be used. Web links with pictures and / or sounds would be useful too.

Villains can include:

1) Cartoon characters and TV show characters.
2) Athletes that are the nemesis of local teams. Johnny Damon was last year's pick, but he's on the Yankees this year. I might use a picture of the referee from the Super Bowl.
3) Political figures.
4) Obnoxious entertainers (Brittney with baby unbuckled in the car?).

Students and parents are welcome to make suggestions and send them to Brian Bertan:
bbertan@yahoo.com

Hebrew School Health Policy

The time has come that we must institute a few new rules concerning the health and safety of our children. We ask that you notify the office if your child comes down with a contagious ailment. Please report anything from strep throat to pink eye to lice. We will be sending home generic letters just like the public schools which simply gives you a heads up that your child has come into contact with an infected child. Along the same lines, Mr. Rubel has asked all boys to please come to school with their own Kippot. Have them keep one in their bag. The sharing of kippot is not ideal when you think that someone could possibly and of course unintentionally come into school with lice, borrow a kippah and then put it back. So please, for the sake of all of our children, please call the office at 377-8892.

This year Sisterhood has prepared a new gourmet gift package filled with an assortment of goodies, fresh fruit and of course hamantaschen, that your family and friends will be thrilled to receive. The office unintentionally left off the names of the Hebrew School staff on the Shalach Manot list. If you would like to include any of the teachers or Mr. Rubel on your list, an addendum is being sent home in the backpacks.

Ohav Sholom Sisterhood has created a virtual fundraiser!

Please visit: http://www.ohav.org/sisterhood/virtualfundraiser.html

Hebrew School Newsletter by Fran Green

Volume 6 Ohav Sholom Hebrew School 145 S. Merrick Avenue Merrick, NY 1/8/06

Welcome Back! I hope you all had a fun-filled winter break. Our Chanukah celebration on December 18, 2005 was a lot of fun. The children made boxes for which to store their Chanukah candles. Each one was beautiful and unique. We had a lot of fun painting, gluing, glittering, dancing and of course eating! Ohav Sholom also hosted a Chanukah party on December 19th for children ages 3-6. The turnout at this party was tremendous! Rabbi Wohlberg read the children a Chanukah story and lit the menorah. After the Rabbi spoke, we were entertained by Laugh and Sing with Bruce. There was pizza, juice, dreidels and chocolate gelt and it was all FREE! This party was open to all members of the community not only Ohav members. So if you have children between the ages of 3-6 make sure to look out for our next big party on Purim!

The book fair was a nice success. It would not have been such a success without the help of those parents who volunteered their time to help set up and run the book fair. Thank you. I’d like to also thank those families who generously donated a book to our Hebrew School Library. Thank you to: Erika & Gary Ehrlich - "Rainbow Candles", Marc & Lisa Fessler - "Jewish Americans", Brian & Fran Green - "The Ten Plagues of Egypt" and Yuri & Mary Sikarevich - "All of a Kind Family". Please feel free to browse in our library and borrow any books. If you are cleaning out and find some books of Judaic content that you would like to “get rid of”, please keep our library in mind!

Don’t forget about JEP! Anyone from 2nd grade on up can attend JEP which meets on Wednesday nights immediately following Hebrew School. Pizza is $1.50 a slice and the fun and learning is free! We’d like to remind you to confirm with the office that JEP is scheduled for that night before leaving your child until 7:15pm! Please note that there will NOT be JEP on January 25th.

I hope you all know that whether you are or aren’t a member of Congregation Ohav Sholom, we encourage you and welcome you with open arms to partake in our many activities. Save the date! Hebrew School Newsletter by Fran Green

Our school year is really in full swing now that the holidays are over. Our Shofar Factory was a huge success and the children really enjoyed making their own Shofar despite the bad odor! The Sukkah Happening was lots of fun as well. Each class made a banner which was prominently displayed during Simcha Torah. The children marched around the sanctuary proudly holding the banners. Thank you to all the parents who came out to the Shofar Factory and/or the Sukkah Happening. Your help is greatly appreciated and your children enjoy having you there whether it is to help them or simply observe their work! We would like to encourage all parents to become actively involved in all Hebrew School Celebrations!

Speaking of celebrations, our next one will soon be upon us! Our Chanukah Celebration will be on December 18th, so mark your calendars and let Bonnie (in the office) know if you can help out! Not only will we be doing a craft pertinent to Chanukah but we will be celebrating with Latkes and Applesauce! YUM!

On December 11th and December 18th we will be having a book fair. We need volunteers for both days to help out at the book fair. We hope that on these days you will park your car and come in with your child so you can peruse our selection of books!

While we’re on the topic of books, some of you may or may not know that we have a library towards the back of the Hebrew School. We are trying to get this library up and running. Most of it will be for the children. We ask that if you have any books of Judaic nature that you may want to contribute to please give them to Mr. Rubel. We also ask that at the book fair that you might purchase a book or two to donate to our library. We thank you in advance for your generosity!

JEP is also back in full swing. We have a new group leading JEP this year and the children in attendance really seem to love it. They’re learning and having fun. Last week they learned about Friendship, Mitzvot, Peace and lots more.

The Shofar Factory Workshop will be held on September 25, 2005 from 9:15-11:30 a.m. The cost is $10.00 per child.

We would like to welcome our new Daled teacher, Morah Malka Greene. Morah Malka was the Assistant Program Director and Program Director for Jewish Educational Program for five years. She has had quite a lot of experience with children as a tutor, a mentor, a coach and now she is beginning her teaching career here at Ohav while finishing up her degree at Columbia University Teachers College.

As many of you already know, Mrs. Beiler who teaches the K’ton-Ton class, is out temporarily and her daughter, Morah Rachel will be filling in until she gets back. We welcome Morah Rachel and appreciate her help.

JEP begins next Wednesday, September 28, 2005. The Jewish Education Program of Long Island offers a wide range of educational and recreational programming aimed at Jewish youth ages 7-14 and their families. JEP will begin at 6:15 immediately following Hebrew School and it goes until 7:15. The girls that lead the JEP program bring pizza and you may purchase a slice or two from them for dinner.

Congregation Ohav Sholom is having our annual end of summer BBQ Sunday September 18. 4 PM on the lawn. We would like to invite you all to attend. If you’re not already a member of our synagogue but are interested in getting to know our synagogue family, please contact Fran Green at 781-0020 or email us at membership@ohav.org.

There are many ways you can stay informed about what’s happening in the Hebrew School or in the Shul as a whole. If you would like to receive email updates regarding the Hebrew School events, please contact Deborah Cohn at DYCOHN@optonline.net. You can always check out our Blog at www.ohavsholom.blogspot.com or you can sign up for the Shul’s weekly email newsletter, the Shofar, by going to www.ohav.org.

For those of you who are not familiar with the “Kosher Kart”, we instituted it last year. The “Kosher Kart” sells healthy snacks and water before Hebrew School begins. The “Kosher Kart” was developed to help parents provide snack without scrambling at home after school and before Hebrew School. Please note that the “Kosher Kart” will begin its service on Monday, September 19, 2005. Your children MUST be at school before the bell rings in order to get snack. Once the bell rings, the food is put away. There are NO exceptions as the students run the “Kosher Kart” themselves and they have to get to class. Snacks and water are each $.50 although Israeli snacks cost $1.00.

On Monday, September 26, 2005 at 5pm, Rabbi Wohlberg will be speaking to the children about the upcoming holidays. All parents are invited to attend. That’s all the news for now!

We hope to see everyone at the BBQ on Sunday at 4pm!

Kick Off Brunch August 28 10:00 AM-12:00 PM

At Ohav Sholom 145 South Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY.

The Hebrew School will be having a welcome back open house brunch party. Come and meet our principal, Jack Rubel as well as our children, parents, and faculty.

For anyone who is thinking about if they should send their child to Hebrew School or where they should send their child to Hebrew School this event is a must.

Come and join the Ohav family and see why our Hebrew School is right for you!

All are welcome.

Come and meet our teachers:

Tamar Levine:
Tamar Levine has always enjoyed Jewish education. While attending Queens College's Scholars and Honors programs, she completed her undergraduate studies at Mesoret Institute for Women, where she earned her teaching degree. Mrs. Levine has experience teaching at all levels of education, including subjects ranging from college-level calculus to grade school Judaic Studies, which is her focus. Mrs. Levine believes strongly that the dual goals of grade school Judaic Studies are to open young minds to the intellectual beauty of the Torah while giving students the fundamental tools with which to begin lifetimes of continuous learning. Mrs. Levine looks forward to building warm and close relationships with her students and with the Ohav Sholom community.

Jack Rubel, Educational Director:
Mr. Rubel is an experienced educator with over 30 years experience in the public school system. His experience as an award winning NYC public school educator, principal of Central Hebrew High School and Jewish educator at Oceanside and Baldwin Jewish Center, Temple Emanuel of New Hyde Park and Temple Judea has provided him with a wonderful understanding of children from all walks of life and levels of Jewish observance. Mr. Rubel earned both a B.S. in Business Management from New York University as well as an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from New York University. Under his leadership since 1997 we are able to achieve our goal of developing a sense of Jewish pride in each child.

Jeff Beris, Music Teacher and Bar/Bat Mitzvah Instructor:
Mr. Beris has been the music director at Ohav Sholom for the past 8 years, following more than 20 years teaching in L.I. Hebrew schools and the Hillel Country Day School. He has also been our Bar/Bat Mitzvah instructor for the past 10 years, teaching many children from Ohav as well as neighboring synagogues to successfully chant their Torah and Haftorah portions. As an active member of Ohav Sholom, Mr. Beris is involved in many of our youth programs during Sabbath Services and synagogue activities, such as Junior Congregation, Youth Shabbat, afternoon Oneg Shabbat, Family Bingo Night and Succah Happening.

Lisa Gelernter:
Mrs. Gelernter was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. She served in the Israeli army for two years, and attended Wingate University in Israel. She then worked with mute, blind, and other children with disabilities for two years. She came to the USA in 1984 and worked in the J.C.C of West Hempstead for ten years, running a successful “Early-Late” child care club for working mothers.

Rachel Rosenbloom:
Mrs. Rosenbloom was born in Bahrain, a small island in the Persian Gulf, about 50 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia where there was a small Jewish Community. She immigrated to Israel with her family shortly after the Six-Day War in Israel due to concerns about possible anti-Jewish violence on the island. She studied at the Teacher’s Institute in Tel Aviv (Seminar Hakibbutzim) and worked in Tel Aviv before moving the United States in 1988. She has worked in the field of education since moving to the U.S., first at the Hebrew Education Society in Brooklyn and then at the Little Village School in Bellmore. She married in Israel and has two daughters.

Burn Your Chometz before Passover. Community Event

The search for leaven. Bedikas Chometz, occurs Thursday, April 21, 2005 after nightfall. This is the "feather and spoon" activity that all children love!

This year, on Friday morning, April 22, from 7 AM - 8 AM, Congregation Ohav Sholom (with approval from the Merrick Fire Department) will host Biyur Chometz, the burning of the remaining leaven found during the previous night's search. Although it is early in the morning, it is a great opportunity for our children to participate.

The fire dept will be present to ensure safety and participate in our ritual. I think our children will have a great time. It is early so that we can do it before work and school.

Bring your chometz to be burned.

Bedikas Chometz

The search for leaven. Bedikas Chometz, occurs Thursday, April 21, 2005 after nightfall. This is the "feather and spoon" activity that all children love!

Before beginning the search one should recite the blessing:

Baruch ata Ado-noy, Elo-heinu Melech ha-Olam, asher kee-dish-anu bi-meetz-vo-sav vi-tzivanu, al bi'ur chametz.

In order that the search can be performed with a blessing in a house that is completely clean, the custom is to distribute ten pieces of bread around the house before the search. Whoever puts out the pieces should make a note of where they are located, in case any are not found during the search.

It is perfectly acceptable to use a flashlight, although many maintain their custom and conduct part or all of the search with a wax candle-which is fun for children. The custom is to use a feather and clean away the bread that is found. Any leaven discovered by the search is carefully set aside to burned the following morning.

Upon completion of the search through the house say the following declaration in English: "All chametz and leaven that is in my possession that I have not seen, that I have not destroyed, and that I do not know about, shall be null and ownerless like the dust of the earth."

Bring your chometz to the community burning!

Kosher Kart

The Kosher Kart is a big success! Rabbi Wohlberg endorses the Kosher Kart and buys Pretzels!
The Kosher Kart solves a series of problems:
1. Students were inadvertently bringing unkosher snacks to Hebrew School and the teachers couldn't let them eat them.
2. Students were hungry during Hebrew School and couldn't learn.
3. Food is a big part of our culture. The Kosher Kart provides an opportunity for the students to learn about prayers for food and Israeli culture.

The snacks provided on the Kosher Kart are not unhealthy! (see David Bittman for explanation of calories and good snacks!)

New Kosher Kart Prices: 50 cents for most snacks, $1.00 for bissli.
$1.00 (or $1.50 w/Bissli) for snack and water.
The Kosher Kart will not be available on Sunday's.

Happy Snacking.

Hebrew School Board Meeting

The Hebrew School Board met on Sunday January 30. In attendance was our principal, Jack Rubel, David Safon, Chairman of the Board, Ronnie Bekore, Mike Richheimer, Caryn Seifert, Andrea Bittman, and Deborah Y. Cohn.

We discussed some new initiatives:

1. To enrich the library experience in our new library Andrea will be planning a family centered book club for parents and children ages 9-12. Stay tuned to hear more about our new book club. Andrea is extremely qualified to bring this exciting program to our community. She runs the "Gemini" (gifted) program in the Herricks Elementary Schools and is in the process of completing a Ph.D. in psychology from St. John's University. Check out some of her accomplishments on the Web:
http://herrickses.org/denton/Gemini/globalawareness.htm

She has experience running family centered books clubs. We can all be sure that these events will be a fabulous way for a Ohav Sholom and the larger community of parents to bond with their children.

2. Plans are underway to honor Morah Haimson for her 36 years of dedication to the Hebrew School at Congregation Ohav Sholom in Merrick. Mrs. Haimson started teaching at Ohav Sholom under the direction of Mel Isaacs in the 1970s. (She was my teacher). Anyone who has a favorite Mrs. Haimson story please email me, dycohn@aol.com.

3. Plans are being made to upgrade our Purim Carnival, scheduled for March 20, 2005. We are thinking on incorporating into the event an opportunity to reach families who have not yet decided on a Hebrew School for the 2005 - 2006 year. Please invite friends to the Purim Carnival!

4. We had hoped to march in the Israel Day Parade this year scheduled for June 5. http://www.salutetoisrael.com/about.asp
However, the date conflicts with the Journal Dinner Dance, honoring our own David Safon.
If anyone is interested in being a spectator at this event, please contact me. dycohn@aol.com

5. The possibility of a Yom Haatzmaut (Israel Independance Day) Picnic was discussed. More details to follow.

6. We discussed JEP. Once again. Anyone who has any thoughts about the JEP program please comment on the blog!

7. Our next meeting is February 13, Sunday, 9:30 am. Anyone who has any ideas to contribute please contact any of the board members. Parents - we would love to hear from you!

J.E.P.

I sent a copy of my post about J.E.P. to the coordinators of J.E.P. I received this response. Instead of posting it in the comments section, where I am afraid it might not get seen, I am putting it in a separate post.

A blog is meant to be a conversation. I'm so happy that we have fostered this important conversation between our Hebrew School and J.E.P. The more information we have about their programs, the better we can feel about our children participating in them.

Here is the response from Dani at J.E.P:

Hello my name is Dani, an employee of JEP. I believe we met that Wednesday night in Ohav Shalom, and you paraphrased my statement about JEP's motives in your memo.
I would like to clarify what I said, and perhaps explain why we feel that Ohav Shalom is an excellent place for JEP programs. You mentioned in your article that JEP's goal is to reach out to unaffiliated children. Although much of JEP's work caters to unaffiliated or moderately affiliated families and children, many of our programs are geared to a much wider market. A significant number of our JIL and Camp Nageela participants are children from Orthodox homes, many of whom enjoy a full Jewish Day School education. Additionally we have complete programs geared towards Ultra- Orthodox Yeshiva High School students. Certainly our target group is not limited to the "unaffiliated."
Why? If these children already have a sturdy Jewish base, and high quality Torah education what is JEP trying to do?
There are many approaches to education. Unfortunately, most youngsters and even some adults who are heavily affiliated and well educated in Jewish facts and values have trouble connecting Judaism to their lives. Just because someone has learned a chapter of Talmud does not necessarily mean that he or she is committed to Judaism.
We at JEP feel that we offer a unique slant on education, meant to compliment existing Hebrew School or Day School education, and to make it more meaningful, relevant and exciting for our participants. Certainly we recognize that members of Ohav Shalom- as very involved Jews- are not in the same unfortunate situation as the vast numbers of totally unaffiliated Jews. The fact remains, however; that JEP and similar programs are a useful and important part of even your children's lives and education.
Please feel free to contact me regarding this or any JEP related issue. My phone number is 718-261-4189.

J.E.P.

On Wednesday Night, January 5, 2005, Ohav Sholom parents met with two members of the J.E.P. staff to discuss the J.E.P program. It was a very revealing meeting. Six parents were in attendance: Brian, Mario, Mark, Deborah, Andrea, and Ron. Our own Jack Rubel also attended the meeting.

The J.E.P. staff asked for feedback about their program. Deborah asked if they could explain what the goals of the program are. They said that their goal is to offer Jewish education to unaffiliated children, as well as give them an opportunity to connect being Jewish to something fun.

It was agreed that our children who attend J.E.P. on Wednesday nights after Hebrew School (6:15-7:15) are learning something during J.E.P., and they are having fun.

However, it was debated whether we are the appropriate target market for this program. Meaning, they are trying to reach out to unaffiliated Jews, and they have found us. Have they found the right group? Can we help them achieve their goal of bringing Jewish education to the unaffiliated?

Please weigh in, what do you think of the J.E.P. progam at Ohav???

At the meeting we also discussed other programs that J.E.P. is running. For more information on their programs, please visit their website at http://www.jepli.org/home.html

Welcome to The Merrick-Bellmore Hebrew School Blog

For those of you who don't know, a blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly. Our first postings describe our school, our principal, and our faculty, and our philosophy. You can check these out in the archives. I'm copying part of the first post here for newcomers to this blog:

Welcome to the Blog for the Merrick-Bellmore Hebrew School of Congregation Ohav Sholom of Merrick, NY.We are located at 145 South Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY 11566 on the South Shore of Long Island.
We can be reached at 516-378-1988. Or by e-mail. You can email me at dycohn@aol.com, or email the office at office@ohav.org You can also visit us at www.ohav.org

Congregation Ohav Sholom, The Merrick-Bellmore Synagogue, is a Modern Orthodox synagogue. However, the membership as well as the students in the school Hebrew School include Jews from all walks of life, with a variety of backgrounds, family environments and observances. Member, non-member and unaffiliated families are welcome to send their children to our Hebrew School. We offer religious education to public school children ages 3-13 (bar or bat mitzvah). Rabbi Wohlberg established this Hebrew School as a place where Jewish children from a variety of backgrounds, observances and family environments can learn about Jewish traditions, holidays, prayers, hebrew language and Israel.

News!

New Cubbies for our children.

Hebrew School books getting heavy? Problem solved. Our children have been assigned a locked cubby for their books. Only books needed for homework need to be brought home.

Hebron Pen Pals

The Hebrew School has arranged pen pals with Jewish Children from Hebron. Hebron, located 32 km. south of Jerusalem in the Judean hills, is the site of the oldest Jewish community in the world, which dates back to Biblical times. The Book of Genesis relates that Abraham purchased the field where the Tomb of the Patriarchs is located as a burial place for his wife Sarah. According to Jewish tradition, the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the Matriarchs Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah are buried in the Tomb.

This week our children were assigned to write letters to Jewish children in Hebron to begin their pen pal project. In the spring, we are hoping to organize a video conference in our newly refurbished library between the children of the Ohav Sholom Hebrew School and their pens, the Jewish children in Hebron. Stay tuned for more developments as the year progresses.

Simchat Torah

The Sukkah Happening was a big success. The children created beautiful Simchat Torah banners to be carried with pride during the Simchat Torah dancing.

It's important to let our children attend the services and celebrations for Shimini Atzeret and Simchat Torah on Thursday and Friday morning beginning at 9 AM, as well as the Simchat Torah evening service on Thursday evening.

The public schools know it is a "day of religious observance (dro)" and the teachers are instructed not to cover any new material.

Sukkot Workshop

Although the Sukkot workshop started late and ended in chaos, the children had a wonderful learning experience during the event. The Entire Hebrew School gathered in the "great room" for the event. The students participated in a contest in which they had to guess if the fruit they were holding was an etrog, lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, or tangerine. In addition, they watched a slide show about the holiday and were taught about sukkot traditions.

In the last five minutes of the program the students were taught how to properly put together the lulov and etrog. The chaos ensued during distribution of materials at this time. At the end of the day, it was a fabulous program and a great learning experience for our children (and the parents).

Hebrew School News

Our Hebrew School Brunch was a wonderful success. Thank you for the inspirational words from our Rabbi Wohlberg and our Principal, Jack Rubel. We were all introduced to all of our wonderful teachers. Thank you all who participated.

School is off to a great start. Students and teachers have all met. Rabbi Wohlberg spoke to the students about Rosh Hashana and the upcoming Yom Kippur. The children enjoyed hearing him speak about Israel and about what a great country we live in. And how lucky we are to be living in a country where we are free to practice our religion. Today students were introduced to the brand new library. All the students were very excited about our new computers and the projects they will be able to do with them.

Upcoming programs include:

1. An opportunity to make a Lulov and Etrog. Sunday Sept 26 during class time.
2. The Sukkah Happening. Monday October 4 at 5:15. Hebrew School students and Day School students are invited. Pizza and Soda will be served in the Sukkah.
3. The J.E.P. program begins after Sukkot. Wednesday evenings 6:15-7:15. All Hebrew School age children are welcome to come for enrichment.
4. Shabbat Youth Program Junior Congregation.

Welcome to The Merrick Bellmore Synagogue Hebrew School of Congregation Ohav Sholom

Welcome to the Blog for the Merrick-Bellmore Hebrew School of Congregation Ohav Sholom of Merrick, NY.
We are located at 145 South Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY 11566 on the South Shore of Long Island. We can be reached at 516-378-1988. Or by e-mail. You can email me at deborah.y.cohn@gmail.com or email the office at office@ohav.org You can also visit us at www.ohav.org

Congregation Ohav Sholom, The Merrick-Bellmore Synagogue, is a traditional synagogue.

Various organizational plans for learning exist at Ohav Sholom Religious School. Although the approaches are different, the objective is consistent: to develop small group and individual techniques which are humanistic, which offer appropriate alternatives to the children and which are efficient from the standpoint of learning skills and Jewish concepts. The organizational approaches which are used with any group of children reflect both the children’s needs, the insight of the teacher and the school policy. We fully realize that there is always the danger of an organization formalizing itself to the point where children’s interests are not really the prime concern. For that reason, we will always examine what, how, and why we are doing things since there are only two considerations we can accept: 1. There is no one best way to do anything, educationally, for all children. 2. Effective educational decisions are collective and involve dedicated staff, sensitive administration, and well informed parents.

Message from Jack Rubel, Principal

Ohav Sholom is a traditional synagogue that provides a warm and caring, non-judgmental atmosphere for prayer, study and fellowship. Our children explore their Jewish roots, learn the meaning behind our prayers and experience the importance of giving back to both the Jewish and greater community through a charitable deeds program. To those who aren't quiet sure about where to go for their children's Jewish education, I hope that you will come see me. I'd love to show you around and discuss our program. Be sure to ask to see a copy of the Rabbi approved curriculum.

For us, providing an enriching Jewish education is not just a desire, it is an obligation. As a result, we have put great effort into making our school the best, most nurturing school it can be. Our students receive an individualized solid Jewish education. We are also pleased to be incorporating the resources of a brand new library with computer stations into our curriculum. We are looking forward to an exciting, innovative and productive year under the guidance of our experienced staff and faculty. We began the 2003-2004 year with a fun-filled instructive "Make Your Own Shofar" workshop in which every child made his or her own shofar. We are looking forward to many more exciting programs for the 2004-2005 school year. While one cannot minimize the importance of Jewish "book" learning, in our religious school, we very much stress the importance of learning through the performance of mitzvot. In the past we have helped raise money for the Israel Emergency Fund, Zaka, which provided medical scooters for Israeli paramedics.

This year, we will once again be involved with Bikur Cholim, collecting books written in English that will be sent to Israel to supplement school libraries. We are also hosting JEP, an after school program that meets on Wednesday nights from 6:15 PM to 7:15 PM.

High School students offer individualized tutoring and play games with the children, providing a wonderful Jewish atmosphere. Several of our students also enjoy participating in JEP weekend Shabbatons. Some of this year's upcoming events will include the Sukkah Happening, a Chanukkah celebration, a Purim carnival and our Charoset Bowl.

Registration is now open for all grades. I look forward to meeting you and your children.
